GGEMS 2 is a major redesign of GGEMS, with the objective of building a modern, portable and maintainable Monte Carlo simulation platform for heterogeneous computing architectures.
The project is currently under active development. The architecture is being rebuilt progressively, with particular attention paid to reproducibility, GPU-oriented execution, clean interfaces, validation, and long-term extensibility.
Current status
The core execution architecture is operational, including terminal and cluster execution modes. The new GUI mode is under development using Vulkan and Dear ImGui.
Particle transport infrastructure, random number generation, source handling, radioactivity, particle definitions, observers, units, geometry foundations and multi-device execution are progressively being consolidated.
GGEMS currently focuses first on the particles and physical mechanisms required for medical imaging applications, particularly gamma rays, electrons and positrons.
Physics and simulation
Materials and physical processes are being rebuilt around the new GGEMS 2 architecture. The objective is to support both energy cuts and range-based cuts, including region-dependent configuration.
Geant4 and OpenGATE are used as scientific references for validation and comparison. GGEMS remains architecturally independent and specifically designed around heterogeneous and GPU-oriented execution.
Validation
Validation is a central part of GGEMS 2 development.
Random number generators, particle sources, geometry, transport, physical processes and simulation outputs will progressively receive dedicated validation and benchmark suites.
Reproducibility across CPUs and GPUs is also an important objective of the project.
Documentation and community
User documentation, developer documentation, examples and validation results will progressively accompany the implementation.
This forum is the main place to discuss development choices, suggest improvements, ask technical questions and follow the evolution of GGEMS 2.
Roadmap
Development currently progresses from the low-level foundations toward complete Monte Carlo simulations: geometry and tools, materials, physical processes, detector and output systems, validation, documentation and finally the first official GGEMS 2 release.
The first GGEMS 2 publication and public release are currently targeted for 2027.
